Super Series Round #7: Max Demoss scores career win #1

With just 4 rounds to go in the 2021 CalSpeed Super Series championship, a lot of eyes start to turn and look at the championship chase and some of the usual suspects, but lately talk around the paddock has been the new faces snagging hardware. Round #7 would be no exception…

Alyssa Yauney showed once again why she is one of the absolute best on the Nuotivo circuit, claiming her first pole position of the season in qualifying, albeit her third time in a row in the bonus points on the .657 mile circuit. Joining her in the top starting spots for the first set of heats would be fellow qualifying aces Andres Prieto in 2nd, and Sam Hunt in third. Come the heat races however and it would be three different names claiming the wins, with Masters Drivers Diego Morales and Max Demoss bring things home for the 40+ crowd, while Ironman winner from earlier in the day Chase Nickells picked off his second heat win of the season. No driver would double up on the day, as the second round of heats would go to Michael Hazlewood, the aforementioned Andres Prieto, and another first career heat win, this time out of John Rice…

Newcomer to CalSpeed, Zachary Houghton would lead the field away for the start of the first main of the day, taking off from pol, and maintaining the top spot for the opening few laps of the C-Main. He’d be under pressure. From the get-go he’d feel the pressure from veteran CalSpeed racer Dmitry Korotkov, who was fresh off a very strong run in the IronMan early in the day. That pressure turned into a move for the lead on lap 5, and then slowly but surely, Dmitry would pull out an advantage that would see him unchallenged to the checkers, claiming the C-Main win and the transfer to the B-Main.

The B-main would trade a convincing win, for a battle that went right down to the end; Denis Shakhovski would be the pole sitter after a pair of top ten’s in the heats, but would immediately come under fire from tone of the main protagonists in the Masters championship, Doug Yauney. It was Yauney’s to control for nearly the duration, however he could never shake Shakovski nor Matt Steele from his tail. With two laps to go the attack came but from outside the top 3; Seth Willits had climbed his way into attack position, and would take over the top spot as they came to the white. On the final lap the battle continued, and when the dust settled it was Willits over Steele, with Yauney settling for 3rd.

On the back of a career best day in round #6 where he scored his first podium, Max Demoss would lead the A-Main field of 30 drivers for round #7, joining a P2 in heat 2 with a win in heat 1. That pole position would turn into a lead through the first couple of corners, and through the first few laps, but then the attack came from P2 starter and title contender Paulo Franca. Franca now led a train of five, with Demoss in second, followed by Andres Prieto, Evan Karp, and Michael Hazlewood; the gap to 6th increasing with a considerable amount of infighting, allowing breathing room for the front quintet.

Demoss would fire back a few laps later, with Franca slotting right back in in 2nd, with Hazlewood moving up to 3rd, but not wanting to stay there. Hazlewood attacked; Franca countered, and the pair swapped 2nd and 3rd with Prieto coming out on top of the fracas to steal P2. Heading to the final lap though, the group was all together again, and it was anyone’s guess how it would turn out. The final lap would see Prieto take the top spot through the Monaco hairpin, and then go full defense with Demoss looking to counter in Long beach. Hazlewood would attempt the over-under on the pair, but would mis-time it, instead seeing Franca come through to attack Demoss. The 5 wide drag race to the line would have Prieto leading but it was Hazlewood pushing Demoss passed for career win #1 for Max Demoss, Prieto 2nd, and Hazlewood 3rd. Evan Karp would slip by Franca for 4th, with the top 5 separated by less than a quarter second…
