With the CalSpeed Super Series 2014 season opener just one week away, anticipation for the new season has reached its peak, with entries pouring in for the near-capacity opening round, as well as this weekend’s Sport Kart Race Clinic.
Now, as the off-season draws to a close, CalSpeed is proud to announce several new additions, as well as small tweaks to what is already a tried and true Super Series format. Here’s what’s new for 2014:
$5,000+ Prize Package
The CalSpeed Super Series has established itself as the premier arrive and drive karting championship in the world, and now, it will reward its drivers with a premier prize package totaling more than $5,000. The package is comprised of entries into the Sport Kart Grand Nationals; credits and comps for the 2014 Machismo 12-hour team race; multiple Super Series free entries; and a Sport Kart Race Clinic entry will be randomly awarded at every drivers meeting.
Expanded Field Size
The CalSpeed mechanical staff has been hard at work over the brief off-season – assembling, tweaking, testing and tuning 4 additional Sport Karts to add to the fleet. Starting with the 2014 Season Opener, the entry list cap has been expanded to 112 entries, with more likely to come as the season progresses.
Expanded Qualifying
With the goal of limiting the effects of the draft, last year brought about the green / white/ checkered (G/W/C) qualifying format. For 2014, we will take qualifying equality even further. Drivers will now be broken up into six (G/W/C) qualifying groups instead of four, with an absolute max of twenty drivers on track. This will allow officials to space drivers out on course even more. Also a new rule prohibiting ‘waiting’ on course has been added. Finally, officials now have the ability to watch gaps in timing, thus making qualifying more fair and more about the driver than ever before.
Debut of the Grand Masters Sub-Championship
With the Masters (age 40+) group of drivers growing over the course of 2013, CalSpeed has added a Grand Masters (age 55+) category. With a Masters driver taking every CalSpeed championship offered last season, it will be interesting to see how the battles in the Grand Masters class will stack up…
Return of the Team Championship
The Team Championship returns for 2014, but this time with a little twist; teams will not only need to score as many points as possible, but now they will need to also work together to help each other improve. With a new system in place that results in more balanced teams, and as a part of that, more diverse team rosters, the depth in the Team Championship should be bigger than ever.
Using the results from the 2013 season, each driver has been assigned a value based on the average points total from their best three rounds (rookie values have not been calculated). Teams must be made up of three drivers, with the total of their values not exceeding 825. If a team includes a rookie, then the other two drivers on the team may not exceed 600, while a team made up of two or more rookies has no restrictions. The entry deadline is 5:00pm on January 14th, giving people a chance to scout out the talent with the driver values in mind during round #1. Each driver’s best 10 of 12 rounds will count towards the Team Championship, with the first round counting.
The top drivers in points from 2013, and their respective values are posted below. If you do not see your name, would like to have someone on your team that is not on the list, or would like to officially submit your team, e-mail Mike Smith at mike@calspeedkarting.com
